The Sweetest Hour

There is something about sweets around this time of year that make them hard to resist (and maybe not just ‘this time of year.’) They have a way of pulling you back for, ‘just one more bite…’. Perhaps that mindset should even permeate our lives when it comes to what God has instructed regarding our most precious avenue to Him, prayer.

A blind English preacher, William Walford, in the 19th century wrote a song that well encompasses the precious gift of prayer. “Sweet Hour of Prayer” was written and published over 170 years ago, and very poetically encapsulates the pure sincerity of how beautiful our relationship to God can be. Three verses are well-known within the Lord’s church, (Sweet Hour of Prayer) but this fourth was new to me. Perhaps you’ll find it, as I did, a beautiful comparison to the end of our lives on this earth. But notice the reference to Moses and the end of his life as recorded in Deuteronomy 34.

Read the words from this ‘forgotten’ fourth verse:

“Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer! May I thy consolation share, till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height, I view my home and take my flight: This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise to seize the everlasting prize; And shout, while passing through the air, “Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!””

If you compare the words of this verse and what we know of the area around Mt. Pisgah, on the East side of the Dead Sea, the surrounding area and landscape matches up the description in Mr. Walford’s hymn. Pair this fourth verse up with the 1st-6th verse of Deuteronomy 34 and you will notice that the poetry aligns well with these verses. God has taken Moses to show him the land that was promised to him and his fathers before him, yet does not allow him to enter the land. (Num. 20:9-11 & Deut. 34:1-12) As these parallel well, we ought not to forget or overlook the meanings behind and within these words. At the end of our lives, we can look back on all the experiences. We can see in our children and grandchildren the legacy that we have left and potentially see glimpses of how it will be when we are gone. Knowing we have an end point in our life, what should be the most meaningful and cherished thing to us? Would it be that we made time (spent time) in the sweet hour of prayer.

But if we’re honest, at times our prayers can seem not so sweet. They may feel sorrowful, bitter, painful, and anything but sweet, but read Psalm 141:2 as King David compares prayer to that of the fragrant smell of incense to the Lord. Regardless, of how we feel when and while we pray, it’s the sheer act of sincerely humbling ourselves and taking our concerns to the Almighty that bring us closer to the sweetness we find in Him.

The sweet treats in life are good in the moment, but they will always leave you craving more. Having a personal relationship with our Savior in prayer, will never leave you empty. As a matter of fact, it should leave us wanting more! But it is a relationship that requires active obedience, holy reverence, sincere humility, and genuine faith. All of which will leave us wanting, ‘just one more bite.’

Pass Me Not…

Looking at the second in this series of articles to highlight some of Fanny J. Crosby’s songs, let’s consider the words of one of her songs from 1868. Just 3 years after the pain of the American Civil War, she was encouraged to write this hymn as the result of a visit to a prison. It was in the spring of ’68 and William H. Doane recorded the following: “After she (Fanny J. Crosby) had spoken, and some of her hymns had been sung, she heard one of the prisoners cry out in a pleading voice, ‘Good Lord, do not pass me by!’.” The song finds it’s Biblical basis as we read of Christ passing by the blind me in Matthew 20:29-34. “Two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, ‘Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David.’…”
An additional reference can be seen in the second verse of this song as we read Mark 9:24. Jesus and His disciples are speaking with a man concerning his son’s illness. The boy was possessed by a spirit, vs 17, and the disciples had not been able to cast the spirit out. In speaking to Jesus the man said, “…if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” Jesus response to the father’s plea was in the form of a question as he asked, “If You can?” All things are possible to him who believes.” In this statement Jesus offers hope to all mankind. And, like the troubled father, when we’re honest with ourselves we will admit our own short comings. In reply the father says what Fanny J. Crosby wrote and what we come to sing… “I do believe, help my unbelief…”
Would that we all have a heart that cries; “Savior, Savior! Hear my humble cry…”

The Prayer of the Children

choraleIn January, the Freed-Hardeman Chorale toured North Texas during their Winter Tour. I was blessed to hear them sing most every night of the 12 day tour, and one of my favorite songs they sang was written by Kurt Bestor. In 2005, he shared the background for the song and how it was born from his frustration over the horrendous civil war and ethnic cleansing that was taking place in the former country of Yugoslavia. Having lived in this war-torn country during the 70’s, he grew up loving the people with whom he lived and served. The following is a portion of his explanation behind “Prayer of the Children…”

“When Yugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito died, different political factions jockeyed for position and the inevitable happened – civil war. Suddenly my friends were pitted against each other. Serbian brother wouldn’t talk to Croatian sister-in-law. Bosnian mother disowned Serbian son-in-law and so it went. Meanwhile, all I could do was stay glued to the TV back in the US and sink deeper in a sense of hopelessness.

Finally, one night I began channeling these deep feelings into a wordless melody. Then little by little I added words….Can you hear….? Can you feel……? I started prayer of the childrenwith these feelings – sensations that the children struggling to live in this difficult time might be feeling. Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian children all felt the same feelings of confusion and sadness and it was for them that I was writing this song.

I took a long night to finish the song and I sang it for my wife and family, but that was about it. I put it away for awhile never thinking to sing it publicly. Then one night, as I struggled to fill a 2-hour concert, I decided to sing “Prayer of the Children.”  I’m not sure, but I think it was 1994. The song had an immediate reaction on those in attendance and I was surprised at the almost hushed sound as I sang.”

Why Come Together?

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;

Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;

This old hymn finds it’s beginning in the late 1500’s as the Dutch celebrated their victory in the war of liberation from the Spanish. It stands the test of time when we consider the message of deliverance. From the time it first came into print (1626) in a collection of patriotic hymns, to the early years of World War I, this song of prayer calls on Jehovah God to protect and defend His people.

Since the mid-1930’s, thousands across the country have sung this song of thanks in their worship services prior to Thanksgiving Day. Families gather together on this National Holiday to say thanks. But to WHOM and WHY have we done this year after year after year?  Do we remember why ‘we gather together?’ As the Dutch sang years ago, ‘we gather together to ask the Lord’s blessings.’ Never forget that the blessings we enjoy come from the hand of God. It is from His compassion and grace that we enjoy what we have been given. And therefore…we gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing!

Homonyms and Hymnology

Wooden fence postHave you ever stopped to consider how words, though spelled alike, have a different meaning? It’s easy to see how words like post can mean something you write or something you dig a hole for. Or how stalk, can be a part of a plant or it could mean to follow someone. How about the word yard, or jam, or left, or right, or match, or crane…you see the list goes on and on. These words are commonly referred to as homonyms; words that are both spelled and pronounced the same, but have different means.

Obviously, we find homonyms in some of the songs we sing as well. You might remember singing the word ‘beguile’ in a song or two. This is a word we must know what it means if we’re going to sing it. Notice the second verse of the song, Let the Beauty of Jesus Be Seen:

“When somebody has been so unkind to you, some word spoken that pierces you through and through. Think how He was beguiled, spat upon and reviled, let the beauty of Jesus be seen in you.” The word beguiled means to trick, deceive or cheat. Could it be said that when Jesus was on trial he was cheated? Certainly; taken by night, accused by false witnesses, lied about. We can see how ‘he was beguiled’ but what about another song with the same word, could we possibly be using the same meaning?

“Sing on, ye joyful pilgrims, while here on earth we stay; let songs of home and Jesus beguile each fleeting day…” The word beguile means to trick or deceive or cheat. Would that mean songs about home and Jesus are nothing more than a deception? You know that using that definition would be a misrepresentation of Jesus’ love. Instead, this is where the ‘other’ definition comes in. Beguile can also mean, ‘to pass time pleasantly.’ We sing about our home in heaven and remember our Savior; and those thoughts alone can help us pass the time pleasantly in our life.

But let’s consider another song with a more obscure homonym, The Lily of the Valley(verse 2) “Oh, He all my griefs Lilly of the valleyhave taken and all my sorrows borne; in temptation He’s my strong and might tower. I have all for Him forsaken and all my idols torn from my heart and now He keeps me by His power. Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore, thru Jesus I shall safely reach the goal…” Though you might have noticed more than one homonym, let’s see what Satan is doing to us directly. We sang, “…though Satan tempt me sore…” What kind of sore could that mean? Is it referencing what most would consider ‘causing sorrow or misery?’ Though Satan does cause me sorrow and pain in temptations, perhaps there is another meaning to this ‘sore.’

Written in 1881, Charles W. Fry was in his mid-forties and only months away from death. As he would have been familiar with a more rustic and rural life style, Fry may have also seen a different meaning to the word sore. Truly he would have known this to be a word depicting pain, but perhaps he also knew this word had another connotation. He may very well have known that sore(d) meant to, ‘mutilate the legs or feet of (a horse) in order to induce a particular gait in the animal.’ With this added definition let’s consider the message of the song; “…though all the world forsake me and Satan tempt me (so as to make me walk the way he wants me to), thru Jesus I shall safely reach the goal…” Satan does ‘tempt me sore’ that’s true. But we should never let him change from our walk with Christ!sored horse

And it’s true, we do hurt when we face trials and temptations, but know that Satan wants to do more damage to you other than just ‘making you hurt.’ He is trying to change your gait (a person’s particular manner of walking). His evil desire is to ‘mutilate’ your legs (your heart) so badly that you will eventually change your way of walking. But that’s when we remember the next line of this hymn, “….thru (with) Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.” There are more to our psalms, hymns and spiritual songs than we sometimes realize. Spend time reading, learning and understanding the words you sing as you praise God and edify one another.

 

Stille Nacht (Silent Night)

The following account is one man’s record of how we came to know and love “Silent Night.”  The accompanying video (YouTube) is sung acapella by St. Thomas Boy’s Choir.  They’re singing this song in its original language, German.  The story is told…silent night

 

In 1818, a roving band of actors was performing in towns throughout the Austrian Alps. On December 23rd they arrived in a village near Salzburg, Germany, where they were to re-enact the story of Christ’s birth at a small church.  Instead, the actors presented their Christmas drama in a private home.  That Christmas presentation of the events in the first chapters of Matthew and Luke placed Josef Mohr, one of the ministers, in a meditative mood.  As he left that evening, instead of walking straight home, Mohr took a longer more scenic route. This path took him up over a hill overlooking the small village.  From that hilltop, Mohr looked down on the peaceful snow-covered hamlet. Reveling in majestic silence of the wintry night, Mohr gazed down at the glowing scene. His thoughts about the recent Christmas play reminded him of a poem he had written a couple of years before. That poem was about the night when angels announced the birth of the long-awaited Messiah to shepherds on a hillside.  Mohr decided those words might make a good ‘carol’ for his congregation the following evening at their Christmas Eve service. The one problem was that he didn’t have any musical composition to which that poem could be sung.  The next day Mohr took his poem to Franz Xaver Gruber, a musically talented member of the congregation. Gruber only had a few hours to come up with a melody which could be sung.  However, by that evening, Gruber had managed to compose a musical setting for the poem.  They now had a Christmas carol ready to be sung by/for the congregation.  On Christmas Eve, the little congregation in the village of Oberndorf heard the first singing of the now favorite, “Silent Night.”  Weeks later this Christmas poem made its way down the mountainside and into the hearts of hundreds of thousands of God-fearing men and women.

Yet a Biblical message so beautifully compiled couldn’t be contained to the Austrian Alps.  In less than 15 years “Silent Night” was sung all across Europe.  Then, in 1838 at the Alexander Hamilton Monument, located outside New York City, this melancholy Christmas hymn was sung in the United States, in its original, German language. Then, nearly fifty years after being first sung in the mountains of Austria, “Silent Night” was translated into English.  By 1876, eight years later, that English version made its way into print in Charles Hutchins’ Sunday School Hymnal.  Today the words of “Silent Night” are sung in more than 300 different languages all around the world.

As the month of December draws to a close, consider this old, ‘Christmas Hymn’ again sung in German.  May this old favorites ring through the years and cheer our hearts.  The “Christmas Song of the Day”…Silent Night.

Joy to the World

joy to the worldTwo brilliant song writers, separated by almost a century of time and half a world apart, created of one of the most recognizable ‘Christmas hymns’ ever sung.  Issac Watts and Lowell Mason were musical icons who blazed new trails for spiritual renewal.  Their work has touched the hearts of God-fearing men, women and children for generations.  Yet as they penned the words and drafted the scales of this classic favorite, they never realized how much they were blessing the world with this cherished ‘Christmas anthem.’

Isaac WattsPsalm 98 provides the message that Issac Watts needed for the hymn we know as ‘Joy to the World.’  Reading the words penned by the Psalmist in verses 4, 7 & 8 we see the inspiration; “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song…let the sea resound…the world, and all who live in it…let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord…”  The strength of this song comes was we consider the words of the angel in Luke chapter 2, “…I bring you great joy which will be for all people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord…’ (Additionally, this work from Issac Watts was set in common meter, and ‘Joy to the World’ was originally sung to the tune of ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.’

Born in 1792, Lowell Mason grew up in the early years of American history.  A native of New Jersey, he was raised with a love for spiritual hymns.  His ability to compose music for worship was highlighted in the early 1800’s as he taught Sunday school in Georgia.  His musical popularity escalated in the late 1820’s when 50,000 copies of his self-published song book were ordered by Handel & Haydn Society of Massachusetts.  But one of his great accomplishments came in 1836 when Mason composed a new melody inspired by Handel’s Messiah.  The completed melody was an exuberant ode called ‘Antioch.’  It’s name inspired by the Syrian city were followers of Christ were first called ‘Christians.’  But this new master piece lacked the proper message to fit the melody…until he found Watt’s ‘Joy to the World.’

As December continues to roll along we’ll continue to explore and learn more about some of the songs of the season.  This “Christmas Song of the Day”…Joy to the World.

More Than a Coincidence

Late Night StudyConcerning a particular situation or a specific set of circumstances some might said, ‘What a coincidence!’  But how do we know if something is coincidental (lucky) or if it’s more likely providential?  Often we look at life and see it as lucky or unlucky, black or white and yet all the while we might be missing the point.  Perhaps we come up short of giving God the credit He deserves for working in our lives.  Perhaps we need to be better about recognizing and seeing that God’s hands are working in ways we can not see.  (Remember the song “God Will Make a Way.”)  After all, don’t we pray for Him to be with us?

 

Consider two Christian song writers from this century; Chisholm and Sanderson.  T.O. Chisholm was a well to chisholmrenowned American song writer during the early 1900’s.  Many of his 1,200 works of Christian poetry have found their way into some of our hymnals.  In 1960, at the age of 94, Chisholm passed from this life.  His works are well documented but we’ll consider one that was born on a lonely, dark night.

Another well noted writer and composer from the same era was L.O. Sanderson.  Sanderson was a preacher of the gospel as well a noted musician.  He is recognized as one who wrote the words and music to many of our gospel songs.  He was born in 1901 and passed lo sandersonaway in 1992, at the age of 91.  Like Chisholm, Sanderson penned the music to one particular song in the dark hours of the night.  Perhaps it’s not surprising that these two men combined their talents to produce some ‘greats songs of the church.’ 

It was recorded that one night around midnight, Sanderson was working alone in his office.  He had been preparing his sermon for the coming Sunday morning, but a new, specific tune kept running through his mind.  To satisfy his musical creativity, he stopped his study and jotted down the musical notes.  In a few short weeks he sent the music to his friend, T.O. Chisholm, and inquired of him if had any poetry to fit the scales.  As Chisholm reviewed the work of his friend, he found the musical bars (the meter, 11.10.11.10) were a perfect fit for the poetry he penned, “Be with me, Lord – I can not live without Thee, I dare not try to take one step alone, I cannot bear the loads of life, unaided, I need Thy strength to lean myself upon…” 

As the two friends compared notes and asked each other questions about this specific work, they found that they both had similar circumstances surrounding their endeavors.  Both were working late one night (after midnight to be precise), and both were preoccupied with some specific words, a specific tune, floating within their mind.  They were struggling to accomplish one task while trying to embrace this new song.  And yet both were unable to be resolution to their struggle until they put their music, poetry, to paper.  The extraordinary piece of this puzzle was that both men were creating this song of praise and affirmation some 1000’s of miles apart.  Could it have been a coincidence or just plain lucky?  Was this just a great accident of hymnology or was our God, the Great Composer, at work in creating a hymn for His people to sing for the ages?

Two men of God, in two separate towns divided by hundreds of miles sitting in their respective offices churning out their own contribution to this hymn of prayer.  Perhaps Chisholm’s inspiration in the third verse explains this more clearly; “…a constant sense of Thy abiding presence, where ‘er I am, to feel that Thou art near.”

Looking Into the Dawn

early morning mistThere are some who are ‘early birds’ while others are ‘night owls.’  You’ve heard that the ‘early bird’ gets the worm, and the ‘night owl’ keeps vigil through the evening hours.  We all have our preferences when it comes to the morning watch or the late night.  Some are early to bed, early to rise while others burn the midnight oil; we know the difference.

To be honest we could examine the benefits one’s sleeping habits might have, but for the sake of this article, let’s consider what we might SEE during the early morning hours.  The sun is breaking over the horizon and the sky changes from deep shades of midnight blue to soft tones of lavender.  A beautiful sight to behold!

Depending on your location you might see a mist hovering over the valley, or feel the coolness in a mid-summer’s morning.  The reflection of the rising sun on the lake or the serenity of your sleeping spouse is sure to open the eyes of even the weariest dreamer.  But there was one early morning when a lawyer and amateur poet strained his eyes to see what he feared he had lost.  He was looking for something he had seen several hours early in the fading twilight.  Perhaps he didn’t even sleep as he was anticipating the sight.  But as the story goes, this 35 year old man waited patiently aboard a British Navy vessel waiting to see the dawn’s light illuminate an American symbol, the US flag that flew over Ft. Henry.flag

In 1814, during the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was an attorney working toward a prisoner exchange with the British Navy.  During his visit aboard the British flagship TONNANT, he was met with resistance and  was not immediately released.  The reason; he had seen and heard too much of an upcoming attack on the town of Baltimore and her strong-hold, Fort Henry.  (An interesting bit of information; the commanding officer at Ft. Henry, Major George Armistead, requested a large flag to fly over the fort.  One so large, he said, “the British would have no trouble seeing it from a distance.”  The seamstress recruited for this 30 x 42 foot standard was Mary Young Pickersgill and her 13 year old daughter.  The two women cut fifteen stars that measured two feet from point to point.  In addition, eight red and seven white stripes, two feet wide, were cut and sewn together to form the US flag for Ft. Henry.  This highly visible banner proved to be very motivational to many Americans.)

The attack on Ft. Henry and Baltimore lasted 25 hours while more than 1,500 bombshells were sent to their target.  The British fired the new ‘Congreve rockets’ that traced wobbly arcs of red flame across the night sky as the assault continued long into the evening hours.  With both a land and sea attack, eventually the British cannons ceased their firing.  Then around 1:00 in the morning, the British ships came to life again.  This time, they lit up the night sky with a monstrous display of fireworks.  While the cannon’s were roaring and rockets were flashing, Francis Scott Key and the other Americans drew hope knowing Ft. Henry had not yet surrendered.   Then long before day break, in the predawn of the early morning, a sudden and mysterious silence filled the air.

Francis Scott Key waited in the darkness as his eyes strained to see the horizon and the wave of the enormous Ft. Henry flag.  The British had determined that Baltimore and Ft. Henry were too costly of a prize.  The retreat of the British navy had been ordered.  Francis Scott Key penned what he saw and at the same time asked a question to all Americans throughout the ages.  Other verses were written, but there is some discrepancy as to which ones came from the pen of Francis Scott Key.


O say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Whether you’re an ‘early bird’ or not, the next time you wake up before the rising of the sun, look into the dawn and Francis Scott Keyconsider the freedom you have.  Wipe the sleep from your eyes and remember the battle of Ft. Henry in 1814.  We are a blessed nation.  One with freedoms we don’t necessarily understand nor fully appreciate.  Our nation is the land of the free, but it’s up to you and me if we are to continue to be the home of the brave.  Open your eyes and look into the dawn’s early light.  Search with pride and see the broad stripes and bright stars.  Francis Scott Key would be proud to know, they’re still there!

Show & Tell Time…June 23rd

show and tellAsk any grade school child and they can tell you all about ‘Show & Tell.’  This is the time to share with your friends something you cherish and hold as very dear.  It’s an exciting time because it’s about something you know very well.  Something that is close to you and personally dear.

‘Show and Tell,’ however is not just a child’s activity.  The child of God is also called to participate in this activity.  What will you show and how much are you willing to tell about your Savior?  Is your life as a Christian something you cherish and hold dear?  If we’re truly excited about our walk with Christ we will ‘love to tell story’, and we’ll show Him to the world.

The following songs are found in the hymnal, Songs of Faith & Praise.

“Blessed Be the Lord God Almighty” – 72

A beautiful hymn that is clearly directed to our God.  We begin with the phrase, “Father in Heaven, how we love You…”  Almost as if we’re saying a prayer this song begins our worship as we SING a prayer.  Consider how we sing scripture in the last part of this song, “…the Lord God almighty, who was and is and is to come…” the words of  our Lord and Savior from Revelation chapter 1, verse 8.

“We Praise Thee, O God” – 2

“Hallelujah” is derived from the Hebrew as two words; “halla”, praise and “Yah”, God.  We know that but it’s good to revisit what we’re singing.  Translated the chorus would read like this…”Praise God!  The glory belongs to Him, Praise God!  Amen…”

“There is a Sea” – 556sea of galilee

If you’ve never followed the message of this song read on.  There is poetry within these three short verses and with a rather difficult harmony, we often skip over this old, spiritual song.  In the first verse we sing about a sea that is surrounded with an abundance of natural resources and coastal nourishment; the Sea of Galilee.  From it flows the Jordan river down toward the Dead Sea where the second verse of our song continues.  Unlike the Galilean sea, the Dead Sea is filled with salt and, ‘lies heavy as molten lead.’  Singing the third verse we can see the application and the question is asked, “What will it be for you and me…?”  Will we be like the Sea of Galilee and give out the good we have been given, or will we remain stagnate in our life and refuse to share the God-given gifts we have in life?

“Holy Bible, Book Divine” – no book

This is an old spiritual songs with the tune (meter) of another, more familiar song.  We’ll replace the music William B. Bradbury gave this song in 1858 to a musical arrangement provided by J. H. Fillmore in 1877.  You’ll recognize “Savior, Grant Me Rest and Peace”, but you’ll be singing, “Holy Bible, Book Divine.”  This is a great opportunity to learn a new song with an old melody!

“I Love to Tell the Story” – 659

We talk about all the things we love in life, but before our lesson we’ll sing about ‘loving to tell’ the story of Jesus Christ.  Do you enjoy (love) to tell about Jesus?  Each of these verses are filled with the reason we should not only sing about our Savior, but look forward to telling others about Him too.  Why sing about the story, because “I know ’tis (it is) true”, and because “…it means so much to me.”  How can we sing this song without putting a smile on our faces?

“Lord Speak to Me” – 771

Not a typical invitation song, but when we consider showing and telling this world about Jesus Christ I couldn’t help but think of this last verse; “O fill me with Thy fulness, Lord.  Until my very heart o’re (over) flow; In kindling tho’t (as an ember begins to burn and glow in our thoughts) and glowing word, Thy love to TELL, Thy praise to SHOW.”  People need a Savior, let’s take Jesus for OUR show and tell!

“Thomas’ Song” – 269

An adaptation of Thomas and how he might have reacted in John 20.  Notice especially verse 3 of this song.  Perhaps in the upper room, when Thomas see’s Jesus for the first time since His resurrection, the poet Ken Young, writes; “Holy presence, holy face; a vision filling time and space.  Your nearness makes my spirit race, could this be part of the plan?”  When we are moved and emotional invested in something we have the sensation that our heart is racing.  Maybe, just maybe, Thomas’ spirit was racing when he saw Jesus.  Does Jesus cause your heart (spirit) to race?  Though this song is man’s idea of what John might have said, felt or even thought, the text is clear as we read his final admonition, “You are my Lord and my God.” John 20:28

“Lead Me To Calvary” – 332

Between the Bread and the Fruit of the Vine we’ll sing verse 2 of this solemn reminder of Christ crucifixion.  “Show me the tomb where Thou wast (was) laid…” , where angels robed in light guarded Christ ‘while He slept.’  In our minds eye we should use this time to reflect on Calvary…lest we forget.

“Ring Out the Message” – 622

“Tell the world of saving grace, make it known in every place…”  The local ‘town crier’ was responsible to getting town crierthe message out to the community.  They had the job to ‘ring the message out.’  Today, all Christians have the task to take the message to a lost community.  We believe there is a message that’s true and makes the weary glad, but more importantly…it’s a message for the sinful and for the sad.  We don’t have to stand on a street corner and cry out the message, but we need to be ready when it’s time for “Show & Tell”.
